Running for Rangelands

Trail running for change: Empowering communities and celebrating resilience.

Background

The TASC Foundation provides ongoing support to Meat Naturally Africa (NPC) for their participation in the “Run the Berg” Ultra Trail event, held in the Drakensberg mountains. The sponsorship has been extended for two consecutive years, 2024 and 2025, and forms part of their collaborative efforts under the GRASS project.

The initiative, known as Running for Rangelands, reflects the shared commitment between TASC and Meat Naturally to community empowerment. The Foundation’s donations (ZAR 286 000,00 in 2024 and ZAR 193 800,00 in 2025) have enabled the Meat Naturally team to participate by covering the costs of necessary equipment, accommodation, and transport. For many team members, this marked their first experience in an organised trail running event. Despite this, their daily work in regenerative livestock management had already prepared them physically, and their readiness was evident in their performance. Many runners completed the race among the leading participants, with notable representation from women—twelve of whom finished during the 2025 race.

The events have proved to be more than a physical challenge; they have become a celebration of shared purpose and achievement. This sponsorship has not only facilitated participation in a prestigious event but has also reinforced the values of resilience, collaboration, and environmental stewardship that define the GRASS project and its partners.
